A BRIEF CLUB HISTORY

“Hurstville Amateur Swimming Club” was founded in 1967 using the premises at the corner of Railway Parade and Bellevue Parade at South Hurstville. Harold Reed was the appointed Club Coach for the first five years even though Don Talbot owned the Centre. Don also operated a Centre at Auburn simultaneously.

The Jones family purchased the Centre in 1973, when Col Jones became the Club’s Official Coach, a position he held continuously until 2000. The Club name was changed to “Jones Amateur Swim Club” in 1984, and then, in November 1993, to “Jones Swimming Club Incorporated” on incorporation.

The Foundation President was William Gower, a committed worker at Club and District levels. He was also the Announcer for New South Wales Swimming for a period of twenty years and he was an Announcer at the 1982 Commonwealth Games held in Brisbane and worked as a National Announcer for many years for Swimming Australia.
